Tips for Preparing Your Files

At The Write Stuff, we can accept files created in many different software programs, from either the PC or the Mac platform. Our preferred file format is Adobe PDF because of its ability to embed fonts and images and "cross platforms," while keeping the file size small. You can, however, use any of the software packages listed below with excellent results.

To preserve file integrity and reduce upload time, please compress your files with WinZip (PC) or Stuffit (Mac)!

PC Platform

Adobe Acrobat 8.0 or earlier - PREFERRED
Adobe Illustrator 10 or earlier
Adobe Pagemaker 7.0 or earlier
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 or earlier
(Flatten image and save as TIF or EPS)
Adobe InDesign CS4 or earlier
Microsoft Publisher 2003 and earlier
Quark XPress
(Must Export to EPS or PDF)
Any software that can write Postscript to File:

Mac Platform

PC NOTE: When sending PC files, please include all fonts used in document unless sending a PDF with fonts embedded. Microsoft Publisher is unpredictable with Postscript fonts; we recommend using True Type fonts only in Publisher files.

Mac NOTE: When sending files from the Mac platform, all fonts must be converted to "paths" or "curves." Your Mac fonts will not translate on our system. For Pagemaker, you MUST use fonts which we have on our system. We have over 2000 fonts available but you must check with us to be sure we have your favorites. The most reliable solution is sending a PDF file with fonts converted to "paths" or "outlines." Many software programs have the ability to export directly to PDF format, which keeps the file size small and allows you to use any fonts on your system. See below for additional tips on preparing PDF files.

Image & Photo Preparation

Color Photos, Black & White Photos, & Color Illustrations: These files should be created and saved at 300 dpi. Higher than 300 dpi resolution will only increase the file size and WILL NOT improve the appearance of your image.

Line Art Illustrations: These files can be created and saved at up to 600 dpi. Higher resolution will only increase the file size and WILL NOT improve the appearance of your image. Resolution lower than 300 dpi may cause your image to look "jaggy" or pixelated.

PDF Files - Both Mac & PC

IMPORTANT! When creating your PDF files, be sure to UNCHECK the "downsample images" boxes in the Job Preferences dialogue. Otherwise, your images will arive as low resolution screen images and you will NOT be happy!

Accepted Media

While the fastest and easiest way to get your files to us is to upload them via the web, some jobs, even when compressed, are so large that it is cumbersome to do so. You can send us your disk(s) if you prefer. We can accept the following media types:

PC and Mac Zip 100 and Zip 250
PC and Mac CD-Rom, CD-R, CD-RW, Data DVD
(It is best to "close" writeable CDs so that your files cannot be overwritten)

WE ARCHIVE EVERY JOB WE DO AND SAVE YOUR FILES INDEFINITELY**, so it is easy to reorder a job that has no changes without having to resend your files. We can even perform minor changes to your files for a nominal fee.

**We will make every attempt to keep your file(s) archived; however, we will not be responsible for files lost due to circumstances beyond our control, including, but not limited to hard disc or other media failure, misfiling, or human error. ALWAYS KEEP A COPY OF YOUR ARTWORK!
